I had a recent CT scan and it stated There are 2 areas of diminished attenuation within the liver. The largest is seen in the left lobe of liver on axial image 8 series 2. This measures approx 1.6cm in greates transverse diameter. Hounsfield numbers measure approximately 18...this is likely a cyst. recommend ultrasound. What does all this mean and should I worry?
Hello. The report states two lesions of diminished attenuation (appearance is darker than normal liver parenchyma), which have Hounsfield Unit 18. Hounsfield units indicates the characteristic of the area of interest, with most cysts showing a value of 0-10. Hepatic cysts are one of the most common benign lesions of the liver, are usually asymptomatic and incidentally detected. An ultrasound(or MRI) is advised if there is a doubt, as it will help to characterize the lesions further, differentiate from other cystic lesions, and confirm diagnosis.
Do not worry, as long as the cysts are limited to one organ and few in number. Do write in if you want any further clarification. Take care.
